What is Skin laxity?
Skin Laxity is a term used to describe the density or fullness within the skin which is measured by its level of collagen and elastin. For skin to be tight and full it depends on collagen and elastin, which are two components of the deep layer of the skin called the dermis. As we age we begin to lose these two vital components, so our skin begins to lose elasticity resulting in loose or sagging skin.
Why do we lose collagen and elastin as we age?
There are many things that contribute to the loss of laxity in the skin from intrinsic causes such as genetics, medical conditions and extrinsic causes such as lifestyle, smoking, diet, UV exposure and other free radicals.
Naturally as part of the aging process our bodies production of collagen and elastin diminishes. In addition, exposing the skin to free radicals can speed up the aging process by destroying the collagen and elastin we have.
If we do not consume enough antioxidants to combat free radicals, our skin pays the price. Antioxidants are essential to prevent collagen destruction.
What can be done to combat skin laxity?

The most important thing we can do to protect our skin is to have a quality daily skin care regime containing essential antioxidants to fight free radicals which is responsible for destroying our collagen and elastin. MOST importantly including the use sunscreen daily!
